The silence between Ela and Jim is a reminder of the failed operation of Kin, their daughter, now unable to feel emotions. On their return journey to Sandoz, the mining planet, the ship suffers an accident and they are stranded. To survive, they must cross the planet's eternal white desert to reach Atis, avoiding its creatures who react to their fears, pains and joys.
